Hike at Limehouse Conservation Area (Caledon)

Timing:

June 7, 2014 (Saturday) 10:00 am (4 – 4.5 hrs, 14 km)

Description:

A visit to Limehouse Conservation Area is an opportunity to experience the natural wonders of the Niagara Escarpment as well as the cultural heritage of its past. The Bruce Trail and its side trails take visitors through a variety of Escarpment landscapes including rocky ridges, mature woodlands, meadows & open fields. One fascinating geological feature is known as “Hole in the Wall”, where ladders cut through fissures in the escarpment rock  (it is very safe to climb and doesn’t require any skill).

Trails also take visitors past remnants of the Lime industry where they can stand before huge lime kilns and associated features like an old powderhouse. These cultural heritage resources of the 1800′s are representative of an important part of Ontario‘s past associated with the Niagara Escarpment resources.

The terrain will be variable, at times hilly.  While this is not considered a difficult hike, its length (14.5 km, with an option to drop out after 9 km) with moderate climbs & descents will provide a nice challenge for the novice as well as experienced hiker.

What should you bring?  Your lunch, lots of water, sunscreen, & you may need bug spray.

What should you wear?  Boots or very sturdy comfortable shoes, a light long sleeved shirt may be useful for sun and/or bugs, shorts or light weight pants and a sun hat. Depending on the forecast, bring a rainjacket.

Hike Leader:

Doreen Smith is a very experienced hiker on the Bruce Trail and many other trails in our region & other parts of the world, and a long-time HVHTA board member who has led many hikes for our members & guests.
