Our first spring hike will explore Mono Cliffs Provincial Park, one of the highest locations in southern Ontario. The route will include the Lookout Trail which peaks at a height of 550 m above sea level, and on a clear day offers spectacular views as far as the CN tower. Turkey vultures can often be seen here flying around the cliffs.
Mono Cliffs Park protects a picturesque section of the Niagara Escarpment, with outstanding geological features such as two unusual outliers (prominent masses of rock, separated by erosion from the main rock body), crevice caves, a glacial spillway, a kettle lake and a kame moraine.
Our walk will take in a variety of forest types including mixed hardwood stands, as well as some of the oldest, intact, old growth White Cedar forests in eastern North America. Research has shown that some cedars have survived on the escarpment face for over 700 years and are now the oldest living trees in Ontario. Despite their age, they may be no more than five centimeters thick and a metre high. Their contorted & gnarled shapes are testimony to their struggle.
Dress for the weather, wear good boots, bring a lunch and a hot drink as well as water.
After the hike, you may wish to enjoy refreshments at the local Mono Cliffs Inn.
Note re weather or road conditions: if conditions don’t look good, please call the hike leader to ensure the hike is still on.
