Winter Walk North of Nashville
SEE CAUTIONARY NOTE BELOW !!!
Sat. Jan. 13, 2018 9:30 am (1.5 – 2 hr), 4 km
Join us on a winter hike in lovely Nashville Conservation Reserve which surrounds the meandering Humber River between Kleinburg and Bolton. If seasonal conditions allow, we will go off-trail to explore an area of the Reserve that’s accessible only when the ground is frozen and snow-covered (when boots leave no imprint on the ground). There is a wonderful variety of landscapes and plant communities (pioneer and mature forests, meadows, savannas, wetlands, reforestation plantations) which are often best seen in wintertime. If the weather is mild, we will probably follow the signed loop trail instead.
The walking pace will be easy, the distance traversed about 3 or 4 kms, and the duration around 1.5 to 2 hrs. However, keep in mind that walking through snow is not as easy or as smooth as you may be more used to on maintained trails.
Dress in layers appropriate to weather conditions, and wear winter boots with good tread. If the conditions are icy, consider wearing “icer” strap-ons over boots. If the snow is deep, consider wearing snowshoes.
CAUTIONARY NOTE RE WEATHER AND GROUND CONDITIONS FOR JAN 13 HIKE
Temperatures are forecasted to be -13 degrees C with a chill factor making it feel like -23 degrees C below zero. Hikers are advised to wear clothing layers which include an outer windbreaker & face protection such as a balaclava.
Ground conditions are expected to be icy and potentially slippery underfoot, so winter boots with good tread are essential. Icers or other strap-on cleats for boots could be helpful for traction. Ski poles may also be helpful.
Hikers who come prepared with suitable winter clothing and footwear will be welcomed on the winter walk.
Depending on weather and ground conditions tomorrow morning, the hike may be shortened in terms of distance and/or time.
For hikers who enjoy winter’s challenging conditions and appreciate winter’s spectacular scenery, and are well prepared to deal with conditions outlined above, the walk could provide a highlight of the season!
Mark van Stempvoort is Hike Coordinator for combined chapters of HVHTA, and board member for the Kleinburg Chapter.
Park near trailhead at junction of Huntingdon & Kirby Roads, a couple of kms north of Nashville Road (same distance east of Bolton).
