Winter Hike: The Mill & Ice of the Humber River Though Bolton

Winter along the Humber River offers a fascinating glimpse into both nature and history. On this hike, we’ll follow the river downstream, passing bat houses and the site of the 2019 ice dam that caused significant flooding in Bolton. We’ll also visit an oxbow—a U-shaped bend that once marked the Humber’s historical path on old maps.

While the area once hosted several mills powered by the river, time and natural forces have erased much of their physical presence. Floods have destroyed dams, and buildings have either burned or been torn down. Though we can only point out the locations where these mills once stood, their stories remain a part of Bolton’s landscape.

Some may want to retrace our path back the original parking lot; others may just do the route the one way. If that is the case then we could arrange for parking some cars at each end and share routes at the bridge itself or some may have the time and energy to walk back to where we started as we had originally planned.
